Ponduru Handspun Handwoven Cotton Sarees

Collection: Ponduru Handspun Handwoven Cotton Sarees

Originating from the village of Ponduru in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, Ponduru handspun handwoven textiles hold a revered position in India’s history. It is the only surviving center where the entire production process—from raw organic cotton to finished fabric—is done locally entirely by hand using ancient, manual techniques.

  • Made from indigenous short staple organic cotton called Konda Patti (hill cotton) and Yerra Patti (red cotton), it is processed manually. The fabric has a unique texture and is known for its softness, unmatched comfort, durability, and eco-friendliness.
  • Spun on traditional single-spindle charkhas and woven on heirloom pit looms, it is lightweight and highly breathable. The fabric naturally keeps the wearer cool in summers and warm in winters.
  • Impressed by its fine texture and quality, during the Swadeshi movement, Mahatma Gandhi preferentially chose and championed Ponduru handlooms as symbol of self-reliance.
  • Authentic Ponduru handlooms have been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, ensuring that its historical integrity and the livelihoods of its rural weavers remain legally protected.
